We're able to participate by sending in FOUR NEW VIDEOS, filmed in EL DEPÓSITO, our rehearsal space in Bogotá, which we pimped out during Covid in an attempt to keep playing, even if it's just a few of us at a time. We were able to finish pre-production on the next XUMAPAZ album and used our phones to film some of the process. And then we made these FOUR VIDEOS for COVERSFORCOVER which you can watch on December 10th at 7:30 p.m.

WATCH THEM HERE!

The proceeds go to a wonderful organization called GIRLFORWARD who mentor young women in the Chicago area.

Our thanks for the invite and I hope we make a lot of money for this great cause!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195225257107659037.post-10645660476037326662021-04-25T16:25:00.003-07:002021-04-25T17:09:15.104-07:00TIS THE SEASON (El regreso de la pelota caliente)
I love watching someone who's having a great day. Baseball gives you that opportunity. Today it's the youngster pitcher Michael Kopech. He can hardly believe it. Other days it's been Yermín Mercedes, who has had a burger named after him. You can watch a video of him trying the burger for the first time and approving. 'Tis the season.

I welcome the return of the pelota caliente a mi vida (y en mi vida laboral... ) And I bless technology (for a change) for making it possible for me to watch the CWSox WHENEVER I WANT! The past few games have been so damn entertaining, and with my rockstar TA back in action (he's beautiful even when he Ks), I feel some relief from the strange ongoing Covid thing. Aunque desde que empezaron a cantar "God Bless America" at the park, I've felt a certain disconnect with the spectacle. It's the game I love. So play ball!

You'd be surprised how much guitar you can practice during a full-length bball game. I could probably just repost my blog from two summers ago, when I visited my hometown of Chicago and got to play with some of the musicians I love and miss when I'm away, and also meet and play with new (to me) talent, but although I'll be hanging with many of the same, there are ALWAYS new treats in store!

I'll be hitting town on June 19 and hanging around til the end of July and already have something lined up with my buddy Adam Haus at the wonderful Ciao on July 13 and hope to add at least one date with the unstoppable Venezuelan percussionist, Pibo Márquez, also in Chicago for some dates with Charles King, and, OF COURSE, I look forward to crashing every friend's gig I can (like it or not, friends...).

So I'll keep you posted and hope to see you in Chicago this summer!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195225257107659037.post-32784722974122116232016-11-06T07:59:00.007-08:002016-11-06T08:45:31.100-08:00ALREADY NOSTALGIC FOR SUMMER

As the weather grows cold (for those of you in the Northern
hemisphere, and in the Midwestern “yanqui” lizard-corner of my brain), I begin
to look back nostalgically at the incredible summer filled with music, friends
and family. I tend to document as best I can while in the thick of it, then
write it all down later… I guess later is just a little later than usual this
year, but I blame it on the whirlwind post-summer action back in Bogotá, which
–as they (continue to) say in the US– is ALL GOOD!

Chicago is a music-lover’s paradise, especially in the
summer when lots of it is out on the street and for free. It also happens to be
my hometown and base camp for the annual summer pilgrimage. I thank family and
friends for welcoming me back and keeping me busy, and my bike for continuing
to carry me back and forth between all the action.
In August I was back at the VERMONT JAZZ CENTER’S SUMMERCAMP in Putney, Vermont and I just gotta say… I LOVE THIS PLACE! A solid week
of music and music and more music with great fellow campers of all ages and
amazing teachers from all over the world. This year I was especially blown away
by drum instructor FRANCISCO MELA and Colombian pianist/composer CAROLINACALVACHE, not to mention my favorite Ensemble Maestro and sax giant SCOTTMULLETT. I really recommend this camp to anyone looking for a great jazz
learning experience.

Yea, yea, I know: “Where have you been, Sal? Ages without a
blog entry!” And, yes, I kinda got distracted again. I’ve been accused of being
easily distracted. And there is some truth to that. But, like my compatriotas say: “It’s all good”. (I
really hate that saying, actually. Nothing is ever
“all good”. And, as far as distractions go, sometimes I get distracted feo and tumble deep inside my head and I
miss the good stuff going on
outside it.) But there are also times when I get wonderfully distracted. And this
is one of them.
tracks (La brecha), performing Jorge’s
amazing big-as-hell big band arrangement of our tune.

Xumapaz first contacted Jorge Emilio in 2007 while recording
our first Colombian release "Xumapaz". Thanks to a recommendation from percussionist
Luis Pacheco, who has collaborated with Jorge Emilio over the years, he agreed
to record the vibes on Battle Hymn. Later
that year, Jorge surprised me with an invitation to sing with his Caribbean
Paradise Orchestra at the 2007 edition of Bogotá’s emblematic Jazz al Parque festival.
I somehow managed to override the voice inside me screaming, “He’s either
joking or trying to get in your pants! You can’t sing that stuff!” and accepted
his offer on the off-chance he was serious and prepared as best I could for the
first rehearsal, after which, I figured I’d know for sure. Both Jorge and his
band of (24!) merry men behaved like the gentlemen they are and I was hooked.
Many of you will never know the thrill of singing in front of a wall of brass
and copper and goatskin and vibes, but let me assure you, it’s addictive. Thus
began the adventure.

We’ve never looked back. (Actually, I’ve looked back almost
the whole time, over my shoulder, for the real
singer that should have this dream gig and who could probably do it way better
then I could, etc. etc.). The same Caribbean Paradise Orchestra reappeared for the
Teatro Libre’s 2009 Jazz Fest, sharing the bill that week with Brad Mehldau,
Habana Report, Kenny Garrett and Ronald Carter, and that same year traveled to
Sincelejo to record a live album in the Plaza de Majagual. On a number of
occasions Jorge has invited me to perform arrangements he wrote for me with
other big bands around the country. On each of these occasions I’ve had an
opportunity to learn from and perform in this new musical idiom. (One of the
best and most frightening experiences in a singer’s career.) So when the idea
arose to record the repertoire we’d been performing live, and to add to that
repertoire some new tunes, enlisting the talents of the great players who have collaborated
with Jorge in recent years, I felt honored.

The result is “Alegre encuentro”. Please give it a listen and let us know what you think. And,
if you like it, buy a copy and tell a friend. MAKES A GREAT STOCKING STUFFER

ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR JAZZ AL PARQUE! And how proud I am to be part of such a vibrant and varied music scene here in Colombia. I had a great time in the festival's relaxed, open atmosphere in Parque del Country, enjoying groups come from afar and, especially, the amazing Colombian musicians. And after a summer in the US, hearing music at festivals, on the street, and in bars, I gotta say Colombia can feel very proud and totally on a par with musicians around the world. Congratulations to everyone who played this year... I was TOTALLY JEALOUS (I want another turn!!!) and inspired to keep making music with my band, with my buddies, and with others on this incredible scene. Here's a link to our concert at the National Library, just to remember how great it is to play music!!! XUMAPAZ AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY. IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK! Some of you might have heard... I broke my foot in early February and spent the better part of the last three months with my leg up... nice and quiet. And while I like a rest as much as the next guy, this one went on for a lot longer than I was expecting. It is, therefore, with GREAT JOY that I announce the upcoming XUMAPAZ gig as part of the COLORES DE LA MUSICA Festival. The show is at Café Libro de la 93 (Bogotá). Can't wait to see you all again! Look ma, NO CRUTCHES! - Sally

- Sally
(VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL ABAJO)
The year is off to a wild start - lots of good stuff, especially a GREAT ARTICLE by one of my favorite Colombian authors and music critics, Sandro Romero Rey. His blog entries are published in the country's No. 1 literary mag "MALPENSANTE" and this one asks the question: "Why do some foreigners fall so deeply in love with Colombia?" I don't believe we really got to the bottom of that question in the interview, even though it lasted for well over an hour, but the text reveals lots of little details I'd forgotten about my happily checkered music career and made me realize how, without actually being aware of it, this long musical haul of mine has touched the lives and sensibilities of many people I really respect. So thanks to Malpensante and, especially, to Dr. (and not just of rock) Romero Rey, the biggest Stones fan I have ever known and possessor of more music trivia than I'll ever be able to retain, for putting it all down in writing. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

¡FELIZ AÑO!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195225257107659037.post-5072219613043064872014-11-07T18:14:00.001-08:002014-11-07T19:56:29.388-08:00"ADIVINANZA" SELECTED FOR FESTIVAL DE CINE DE SANTA FE DE ANTIOQUIA!

OH MY GOD! This is great news! I just got a letter from the Santa Fe de Antioquia Film Festival announcing that "ADIVINANZA", the animated video I put together with my collages (and lots of help from Ma. Paulina Ponce, Diego Forero, Susana Carrié and Pedro Ramos, to name just a few) has been selected for this year's festival. The video will screen in the Caja de Pandora section of one of my favorite events of the year. Every evening as the sun goes down, people set up chairs or lounge on the ground in the squares of this tiny jewel of an old colonial town in the mountains of Colombia to watch movies OUTDOORS! It's nice and warm and there's free popcorn! It doesn't get much better than this. Hey... maybe we can get a gig out of it too! Watch the video in the comfort of your own home here!

I love any excuse to get out of town... especially when it means seeking warmer climes. But a road trip with my band is the best! We left Bogotá this morning in "La nubecita" - Alejo's solid, white SUV-kinda-like-car (I'm not sure what you call them these days... "crossover" maybe?), packed to the gills with instruments and backpacks and a gaggle of ready and willing Xumapaces. Our 9-hour road trip, went off without a hitch and was even pretty enjoyable, complete with a decent roadside plate of beans and rice and FOUR DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF M&Ms (ever try the "mint" ones?) Those of you in and around Medellín, we look forward to seeing you tomorrow at CasaTeatro El Poblado in Medellín! Everybody else - what are you waiting for to book us in your town? WE'RE SO MOBILE!!!

How good it is to take the stage with musicians you love and trust, with professionals who not only know what to play, but know how to play it – with power and grace. Our show last night at Colombia's National Library was rewarding in so many ways: we had worked very hard to design a set of songs that would showcase the best of what we do as composers and players while incorporating some of the Colombian music that inspires us, hoping in this way share a bit of our "process" with the audience, without sounding pedantic or boring, and conveying the undeniable power of roots music on musicians and music lovers everywhere. Judging by the tremendous response of our audience, I feel like we accomplished out mission. But it wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of Xumapaz's technical crew, starting with lighting director Diego Forero (and his assistants Miguel Angel Fernández and Juan Kai Mejía) who brought color and warmth to the stage (with generous support from Cecile Biquart at the Jorge Eliécer Gaitán Theater and Alvaro Moreno's magical lanterns), Jeanette Riveros and her crew at the National Library's Centro de Documentación Musical, who along with the Ministry of Culture sponsored the event, audio engineer Milton Piñeros, and Xumapaz bassist, Alexander Vargas, who besides kicking butt on that bass managed to set up and pull off a 24-track recording of the gig (with help from Federico Viviescas). Working with soprano sax player Juan Benavides for the first time was also amazing. He brought something new and exciting to the project, as both a fine musician and a fine human being. But my most special thanks go to Alejo, Linus, César, Pacheco, and Alex, the core of this project, who once again gave it everything they had... and truly shone.

Great full-page spread in REVISTA ARCADIA this month with a great article by Eduardo Arias (despite having to read in print that my relationship with Colombia has now been going on for MORE THAN 30 YEARS!!! Yikes, time flies!) Love the picture by photographer Carlos Mario Lema, too. It's great that Eduardo was at the launch in June and that he loved the show. It feels like the new DVD is really taking off!

The idea behind this series of concerts is to incorporate
into the band’s repertoire pieces deposited in the
National Library’s music archives. We've devised a set of original Xumapaz compositions and for each of these a theme by a Colombian artist, in the Library archives and in the genre that inspired the Xumapaz song. With this setlist in mind, I set out with Xumapaz
guitarist/arranger Alejo Restrepo, as geeky as I am when it comes to manuscripts and old recordings, to seek out the songs in the Centro de Documentación Musical.

As we breached the imposing white marble façade of the monolithic institution founded in 1777 whose mission is to “preserve and
disseminate the nation’s historical memory”, I felt like we were walking onto the
set of some Stalin-era biopic. Before us a mammoth double-tier granite
staircase led up to the Centro de
Documentación Musical on the fourth floor. An enormous banner with Alvaro
Mutis’s face hung down from the second story into the main hall. The
sound of our footsteps on the granite echoed suitably, very much in keeping of my idea of an
ascent into the lofty heights of erudite learning, although the reading rooms
on either side of the second floor landing were eerily empty,
save for the young uniformed guards seated at the entrance who turned their heads
hopefully at the sound of approaching footsteps and sighed audibly as we continued past. On the third floor landing we encountered a towering Rubrik's Cube made from discarded replicas of 19th-century furniture. I tried to imagine as we continued our climb, why, in a
building this gargantuan, undoubtedly riddled with spooky, abandoned storage
rooms or at least an unused corner of the basement, they had chosen to stack
these relics on the main staircase. But by the time we reached the
fourth floor we were in tune with the building’s zeitgeist and not in the least surprised to find…
nothing. The staircase ended on the fourth floor landing, so where was the Centro de Documentación Musical?

Well, milady, if you’ll just step out onto the roof and through the puddles on the tarmac over to the fire door in front of you... I was instantly transported back to the science labs in my old
high school with their stainless steel tables and chairs, linoleum flooring and
spacious hallways. But where were the manuscripts? As it turns out, the
Center’s anachronistic circa-1938
looks are misleading; the information we sought had been very efficiently
entered into a computerized database, which we accessed with help from the
Center’s reserved but very competent staff. We filled out a form with the
reference numbers of the songs we were seeking and a librarian in a lab coat (a
combination I found disquietingly erotic, but that’s just me) came back from
who knows where with a stack of manila file folders.

Although none of the manuscripts we were shown had been
penned by the composers themselves, each of the handwritten scores hinted at
stories of ink-spotted copyists shackled to creaking Dickensian desks or
provincial performers invited to the capital to entertain at the Hotel Tequendama's oh-so-fashionable Salon Rojo (the lyric sheet we were given for “El chimbilaco” was written in felt-tip
pen on the back of one of those cardboard advertisements you find on hotel
night tables). No uniform, computer-generated notes and rests here; we were greeted by
a variety of hands and styles, each in its own way perfectly neat and orderly.
Obviously, a lot of thought and pride had gone into the preparation of these documents
destined for the National Library archives.
I admit I felt a nerdy chill pass through me as I lined up
the scores on a vast wooden library table and fired up the “scanner” on
my iPad. This was history I could touch, not just look at on the

hands, like ours, in love with the music.

staircase and on to unexpected adventure, and once again take my hat off to the Library's untiring cultural warrior (and pianist), Jeanette Riveros, who has proudly promoted the concert series every time we meet at a concert or cultural event.

This morning, over my "primer café" before an appearance on "El Primer Café", Canal Capital's morning chat show, I am thinking how lucky I am to have music as an excuse for meeting and maintaining long-term relationships with so many generous, quirky, volatile and, above all, talented musicians and artists willing to come along for the ride. Promoting a new album means an inevitable series of promotional encounters in which you have a very limited amount of time to "shine" and convince, seduce and sparkle. I never relish this type of challenge –I'd rather PLAY than talk– and so I'm always grateful when an interview turns into a conversation and, even better, a chance to play acoustically and improvise live-and-direct. My thanks go out, first of all, to Margarita Posada, who invited Xumapaz to her radio program "La Posada" last night, for her own sparkle and genuine interest in our music and stories. She's a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome and appreciated. Thanks also to her assistant Marcela and the team at Señal Radio Colombia for providing those of us who enjoy new music and unexpected encounters a place to... SHOW AND TELL! And especially warm hugs to Lina Santos, Alexei Restrepo and Luís Pacheco, my bandmates from Xumapaz, for being so ready and willing to share their stories and our music on such short notice. And so... on to the next one!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195225257107659037.post-42840017097581382092014-06-02T15:45:00.002-07:002014-06-04T08:35:25.068-07:00The Power of Product and Process (El poder del producto y del proceso)

Sitting here with the actual, physical fruit
of our collective labor before me, more than a year since its conception, I
find myself thinking about “product” and “process” –about the value we assign
to each of these very important aspects of the creative act. I am extremely
excited and pleased by the “product” before me; it is pleasing to the touch, to
the eyes, and to the ear, thanks to the talent of each of the musicians, technicians,
artists and supporting personnel who made it possible. I was especially moved
by the comments of my bandmates as we sat down to watch the first DVD: they all
expressed joy at having “something to show for their work”: an actual object
documenting their efforts to conceive, perform and promote music that expresses
who they are and what they can do. This in itself made it all worth it.

But behind the actual “product” lies a
“process”, full of stops and starts, euphoria and uncertainty, two steps
forward and one step back. And it’s amazing how the same process of creating “La brecha” has, ultimately, provided me
with a greater understanding of this “brecha”,
the gap between two opposites, two emotions, two cultures. In this “grey” area,
where we’re neither one thing or another, interesting things occur. And as much
as I love the “product” we will begin promoting with a show in a beautiful
concert hall next Friday, I realize that in the “process” behind it lies the real
gold.

One of the highlights of last year was making this animated music video with Colombian animator (animatrix?) MARIA PAULINA PONCE, director of photography DIEGO FORERO, my eternal dresser and man-of-the-world PEDRO RAMOS, and artist/photographer and long-time XUMAPAZ collaborator SUSANA CARRIE. I finally found some use for all those collages cluttering up my studio and got so excited I made MORE!!! I love the horn arrangement by ALEXEI RESTREPO and the song makes me happy. Hope it makes you happy too! The rest of the DVD is in the packaging stage, so stay tuned!
Once again XUMAPAZ will be participating in the Bogotá Music Market (BOmm)! Selected from over 1,000 applicants, we'll be running our butts ragged, from buyers, to programmers, to showcases and back again, lining up shows for next year. Hope to see you there!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195225257107659037.post-17368577066477155762013-09-03T07:59:00.003-07:002013-09-05T22:32:42.752-07:00What Sally Did On Her Summer Vacation

Every musician, every now and again, needs their butt kicked. Musically. A challenge that leaves you so demoralized you wonder how you could possibly have thought of yourself as a MUSICIAN at all. A situation that so embarrasses you, you slink back to your cave (with a strong cup of coffee and instrument in hand) to practice what you thought you knew and try to make sense of what just happened while you were standing there on the band stand, naked. Or at least that's what it felt like.

Enter Vermont Jazz Center's Summer Workshop. But that hardly seems fair; the setting is idyllic, the people incredibly talented AND convivial, the food is awesome and plentiful... So where's the challenge?

For me it reared its ugly head in the ENSEMBLE CLASS: 90 minutes of relentless scurrying behind changes at breakneck speed (and me too stunned to suggest a ballad), slaughtering jazz standards with my risible attempts at improvisation (Where's the melody? Why didn't I ever learn to play the melody on this tune?) and the ever-present VOICE FROM WITHIN whispering "What made you think you could play JAZZ???"

Luckily, the class was led by a truly amazing horn player with a blessedly blunt sense of humor who knew how to relieve the tension from time to time. I am forever grateful to Scott Mullett (look him up... and listen) for never making fun of the tears I could not keep from welling up after each of my miserable attempts to solo, and for his "thumbs up" -- the only thing that got me out of the cave in the morning and back into battle.

Thanks especially to Eugene Uman (who many of our Colombia readers know from the years he spent playing and as an educator in Medellín and for the tracks he recorded on Xumapaz's 1st CD), who runs the Vermont Jazz Center with help from the amazingly kind and efficient Jane Findlay, and to teachers (there were so many amazing teachers and players that I'd run out of space if I tried to list them here): guitarist Freddie Bryant and Draa Hobbs, bassists Cameron Brown, Marcus McLaurine and Dave Picchi, drummers Claire Arenius and Billy Drummond, trombonist Jeff Galindo and the incredible HAMMERED FOR THE GIG ensemble, who supported this alt-pop misfit throughout.

Strangely enough, I hope to drag myself out of the cave and do it again next year!
